driverless car and the potential impact on taxi driver

5 years....highly unlikely.....but maybe more Prius on the road.

20 years.....infrastructure may not be ready. Many of us would probably have retired or handed in our IC.....LOL.

I am a pessimistic person, i also hopes it won't happen in 10 years time, by then i can afford to retire.

But technically, it is already happened.

In few years time, I won't be surprised that some slow moving bus or cars plying on small roads (private estates) for short distance trips.

Just 20 % of trips made by these driverless system is enough to cause newbies like me out of business.

And in singapore, the only group of people that lose out is taxi or bus driver.

Driverless? Nah....there's no one for the pax to vent their frustrations on...haha.

I would worry more about the new up coming MRT lines and 900 new buses that will take away at least 20% of our business in the next 5 years...

highly unlikely, think about the safety aspect? is only for the 'last mile' journey. These car only got sensors and only react to obstacles in front of them, however they cannot react or 2nd guess what a passenger at a roadside will do.

It will also mean standing by such automated vehicles at housing estate, consider parking space? eg. putting 10 cars at example.. bedok south estate? so what if the demand goes up? 20 cars?

If ever implemented, a scenario might be, alight at Bedok MRt, wait for automated car at bedok mall? bring me to bedok south? well.. if possible .. the fare got to be cheaper then flagging a taxi.

just my 2 cents worth :)

Exactly....not only is technology not capable....even if you put a supercomputer into each taxi, the infrastructure to support this is unlikely to be ready in my lifetime...I can bet my last dollar on it.....right now, they will be happy just to avoid MRT and bus breakdowns...LOL.

IMHO, just think in their shoes in the revenue aspect. Who is going to pay the taxi companies rental if they go for such technology?

Driverless car put taxi drivers out of job. Great. Now, who's gonna help load the luggage or help the handicap put their wheelchair into the boot? Who's gonna be able to make a quick U turn to fetch you when you flag for the taxi on the other side of the road?

Who is gonna to wait for you if you need to stop for a while to run an errand?

There's much more to taxi driving than just fetching a person from pt A to pt B.

Driverless car put taxi driver out off the job !

Apply this technology on battlefield vehicle ! YES.
Driverless car on Sentosa, Zoo, bird park... possible.

On busy, congested public roads very unlikely.
Some of the difficult questions around autonomous vehicles, such as who is liable if there's an accident. Human or the car ?

In extreme situation you still need a driver to control the vehicle. (Aircraft on autopilot does not mean, pilot no need to be on the plane.)
e.g Traffic light out of order... some crazy driver on the road, can the computer read the situation or freeze !
Autonomous vehicle will not breakdown, all those sensors and cameras will work seamlessly, computer will never fail !

When experts can address all those issues, we might no longer need cars on the road.
