the provided gps is not a 'routable' one ,,meaning it does not tell you turn by turn direction to get to your destination.



Anyone got reasonably priced GPS system to recommend?


You can try this website's trading post for cheap good 2nd hand one from enthusiast so should have good maps..www.malsingmaps.com

Check a few brand.. But among all I prefer HOLUX 62.. 5'' screen & just release to market on March so should have the latest software & map.. Price also quite reasonable..

Holux uses "Mapking maps" Try it at eastgear and see if it is to your liking, friendliness of use and speed of recalculation and connection to satelites. Then decide..all the best 5 inch should be great.wink.gif

Yes good price.....try to negotiate with them(eastgear I presume) to sponsor your unit and promise to promote their product leh. Taxi has great potential to demo to passengers the virtue of GPS. But first learn to use it to it's most advantage.

Cream no GPS lar.

I'm driving cream (nt ice cream), the GPS is a receiver only, to facilitate position info for call booking purposes. No display of roads or anything at all.

Bro YTD, hold first dun buy. I bought Holux 62 yesterday $399 found that it is horrible!!!

I shall test these 2 days see what improvement I can get then update you.

Basically this unit is running WINCE 5 CORE, it eats up memory crazy so lagging is obvious if running for hours. Secondly, fast satellite fix is by means of hot fix predictable data stored in the unit so everytime the unit is on coordinates are inaccurate until true fix is settled! For instance, unit is off at Sims Ave, after kopi and on the unit again it predicts using prestored data and ends up ASSUMES we are @ Geylang road, haha go Lor 39 needs to turn right Sims Way -> Sims Ave...

Is this a wrong route Holux 62 suggested?
From Sims Ave/Aljunied Rd POSB go Pasir Ris. Unit suggest:
Turn right Lor27A->Geylang Rd->Right on Lor 1->Sims Ave-> Left to Sims Way->KPE/TPE??? knn.

My preferred route:
Sims Ave->PayaLebar Rd->Airport Rd->KPE (either TPE or KakiBukit Viaduct->Tampines A10)

I am using the older Holux C53 for 1.5yrs and have no major complaints with it thus far, except for the small screen that cant display all the info properly. The winner for Holux is the Mapking maps, which are 95% accurate, and the searchability, meaning the ability to search destination in many ways (postcode, road name, building name, block number, nearest AXS machine, fav cha kuay teow etc)

My unit has no issues staying alert for 12hrs. Of course you have to wait for a satellite fix before your position can be determined. If you switch off the unit in Gey and restart in Jurong, the unit remembers its last location and thinks you are in Gey until theres a satellite fix and then it re-computes. A hot restart takes a few seconds while a cold start takes maybe 45secs. Do remember that GPS is unable to know your direction until you start moving, and that it can only be accurate +/- 20m.

There are a few route options (recommended/shortest/avoid highway etc) that you need to pick. I normally use "recommended", although it may not be the nearest or quickest. Dont use GPS if your life depended on it, but more like a guide and to search out obscure locations or blocks. Our brain is of course the best GPS!

Thanks bro MTL, pointers noted.

Spot another serious error, combination of Mapking+SLA map.

Basically, for driving purpose position of a building MUST be the ENTRANCE not the coordinate registered in SLA. I notice at least a few POIs in Mapking are referenced to center of building and there are roads adjacent to it, to my horror... the GPS akaaka lead me to the road nearest to the coordinate of the building....

Example, Stampford to Furama Riverfront Hotel.
Correct hotel entrance is slip road @ Havelock Road, pax alight in front of the hotel main door.

GPS "recommend" .... chin swee rd -> york hill -> jln minyak
Die die lor, pax alighted need to climb hill to hotel.

U watched 2 fast 2 furious 4 bro BS?
Go watch it, you'll see a big difference how human mind overwrite GPS, especially a 4 mile distance from destination becum 1 mile.
