I'm a single mother of 2 and recently my Company is trying to get rid of me as they can get foreigners at a cheaper salary and I'm at a loss of what to do as I am 48 years old.
I'm wanted to try out for taxi driver as I love driving and am quite good in roads but was wondering if being a female driver is it more difficult to get a taxi licence? Can anyone help me?
On a side note how i wished i could share this link to our dear leaders to let them see for themselves what is happenning to our very own Singaporeans. Still want to increase the numbers of FTs!
Well back to the main subject.
Hi Lee Snow, i just completed my course at STA and obtained my TDVL. I took the full time course which was 10.5 days long. Among my classmates there was a lady. And i felt she did very well. She passed all the 4 modules with 1 try. So i would safely say that being a female does not mean you will have more difficulty to get the license. Post your doubts and queries here, i will try to help to the best of my knowledge. I am sure there are others who are very willing to share their experiences.
Hi snow, you will never know what's the color of the sky until you open your door and step outside to see. We are all human beings. If we can do it, so can you! ;)
For your information, I have a female classmate who is very weak in English. She failed all 4 on her 4 modules badly on her first attempt. I decided to try my best to teach her and help her get her TDVL. Reason: similar to you, she is a mother of 1, need it to earn a living to support her son & both her parents. She manage to pass 1 of the modules now.
As long as you are willing to do something and have the strong determination to do it, nothing much can stop you. Only time matters as long as you don't give up. Have faith in yourself. All the best ^_^

Agreed! I believe if one puts in effort to do the course, sure will pass. Only a matter of time. It boils down to how much you want the license.
the most difficult module is route and landmark. but there's a way to overcome it.
remember the route like you are a driver and is driving to the destination like what you usually would do from your home to shopping.
Yes i have to agree with you.
But nowadays the course material comes with dvd recordings of the route. And i felt it did help on certain routes which i wasn't too familiar with. There are certain techniques to study for the routes. Should not post any problems if you put in the effort to study.
Anyway i heard the 40 routes going to change again in the future. Not sure when though.
Thanks all for your reply, will try my best to get the licence first, the problem is I don't have the time to attend the courses, is there a online course that I can take?
Am afraid that there are not longer online courses available. You can only choose from a fulltime course of 10.5 days or a parttime course of 21 days. You should be able to get more information at the Singapore taxi Academy website.
dont know why they scrap the online course when its actually very helpful for those that have no time for class lesson.
Looking at the course which i just took, and also how the tests are formatted. I feel they are looking to train a new batch of taxi drivers. Different from the olden days. Not meant to be rude or impolite. I felt eversince the IRs started to function, they are slowing changing to course to train a new breed of taxi drivers. Those who are better versed in english, those who are able to protray that Singaporeans are of a certain standard to tourists. Well this is my feel.
I have seen many old uncles who do not have a good command of english having a very difficult time to pass the test. Although some will eventually get their license after numerous tries, some will give up while trying. I did spoke to one uncle who came back for more than 15 times for a certain module test. I politely asked him if he knew what his problem was, and he told me there are certain questions which he does not understand and not able to answer.
I am very sure in due time the course content will again change. It will only become more and more difficult to pass. For now it seems the norm for 60-80% of the class will not be able to pass the first time they sit for the test. Once this passing rate goes up, i am sure there will be some changes again.
But i do have to say that i did learn a lot when i attended this course. Although it might not apply to my daily life unless i become a taxi driver. But i am happy that i learn something new. The course also prepared me for the challenges ahead which i will be facing when i start to drive for a living. Which i think i will blend into the trade in a very short period of time.
Those online course are more difficult to control. Meaning to say some will get people to help them do the course and get the license for a fee.Maybe that is why the online onesare scrapped also.
someone in comfort told me that the course & exam content "will change". the materials are almost done when she told me last month. hmm... I don't know how true it is...
Anyway, everyone has their own learning method and way of absorbing the teachings. Some of my classmates have very good memories, can memorize by hard. Got a few lagi best, can remember quite a lot of locations/landmarks in the street directory on which map number.
I personally can't do that because my memory sux to core... I did not study for the exam but LUCKILY manage to pass on first try. Module 3 & 4 to me is purely by method. If my rusty brain can allow me to memorize the course materials, I will jolly do that. Not boosting here, but just want to say that you do not need to "die die" follow one person's way of learning. Choose one way/method that suites you the most and go along that way.

Yup i am sure they will change some of the 40 routes. Too many start point at airport already. I am sure they will change more routes which are in town with more landmarks to remember.
Frankly speaking for module 3 and 4 is more on techniques. It is just using the proper techniques to beat the 1 hour timeline to complete the test. By using the techniques learnt, i can remember a lot of taxi stands in the cbd area. Need not even refer to street directory.
But need not worry lah. No matter how they change the modules, it solely boils down to how much you want the TVL.
