new member reporting. driving as a part time for Comfort. hope to learn and share here. happy that we actually have such a platform. it only proves that taxi uncles are not 'bo tat chek' people. Cheers!!
Welcome Steel..:)
A very young Prime Minister once said to a crowd, "Look at this young boy. He needs an education. Otherwise, he will grow up to be a taxi driver." Can we therefore blame people for thinking that taxi drivers are uneducated?
Little does he know that 40 years later, he is a victim of his own success with many degree holders turning to taxi driving as a job.
The perception that taxi drivers are "bo tak chek" people still largely exists today. Drive longer and you willfind that some pax, condo guards, hotel bellboys treat you like an "uneducated, society drop out" to be shouted, disparaged and despised at.

Taxilim,
When i was doing delivery to hotels, country clubs for events.. sigh I felt like i was treated worst then a taxi driver.. When i try to slow down and ask for directions to loading bay..some can just 'fu yan' answer aka qive a very vague reply.. 'oh go down carpark lo..look for yellow zone as indicated in your email' <--(ya.. a FT said that too me). some wave me off like a pariah.. like a berlingo is not to be seen at hotel lobby? When i drove weekend car to the very same hotel lobby.. ah then again treatment is different.. LOL!
End up I cannot find my location, make one round back to hotel lobby.. asked a local for direction.. and the reply is totally different.. "oh.. first u must make a u turn down the road, after the U turn, keep right, watch out for 2nd overhead bridge, entrance is below that bridge"..at least the uncle is helping me out.
Taxilim, try talking chim words, to bellboys la, or greet your pax with 'Merci Monsieur' or 'Motle Grazie'
I agree with what you say on how people are looking at taxi drivers. I look at it in a different angle though. It's the culture, which in this case. statements made by our leaders. Culture should be changed, as in only the leaders can gradually change that. Look at Japan, people don't look down on taxi drivers because it's not just anybody want, can be a taxi driver. Since now they are looking at our education and stuff before allowing, hopefully it will flow the right direction. But it's going to take a long time.
Hotel bellboys who don't respect us, I can't even be bothered with them. To me act high though doing low wage jobs. It has to be mutual respect that we are all serving the industry, as a job.
That's truth.. see how professional the japanese drivers are.
Feel sad for the way how policymakers make decisions. On one hand they want to raise taxi driver standard, thru more stringent test by STA at the other hand sterotype Taxi drivers as BTC. ??? Years ago govt deregulate the taxi industry so that, individual companies can adjust their fares to better react to market supply and demands. At one time taxi companies are begging people to hire their cab. Now things have changed, queue is long... and now govt wants to regulate the fares so as to protect the commuters? to make sure there is competition?
Then who protect the taxi companies and taxi drivers? so end up? Taxi companies increase their rental cost to defray the high COE and operational cost, Commuters are protected by the govt from fare increment? end taxi drivers absorbed the increased rental and not allowed to increase the fare?
Hey guys, I agree with you that the society still taxi drivers as BTC and look down upon us. As one of our TU members said today, we are our biggest enemy.
If you look down on yourself then everyone will too.
There is one thing that I would like here - the dress code. There is a reason why dress code is imposed at the TVL course. You notice many cab drivers still dressed sloppily, worse of all, some even wear sandals. I think if we dress properly, pax will respect us better. For myself, I still wear my office clothes now (including the white shirt provided by smrt), and I even put on make up and wear accessories. :) If we all put in the efforts, we will upgrade our status eventually. :)
So far, I do not have much issues with hotel doormen/concierge except for a few instances. These people are more lowly than us, so they will get sh*t from me if they disrespect me. :)
Looking forward to see you guys on the road (OTR) soon.
p.s. i strongly recommend you join the parlingo group. The info we share is invaluable. Check out the "Parlingo Channel" in this forum.
I do agree that the way we carry ourselves, our deposition is important. It may be taxi driving but what we are offering is our services, how we engaged our pax in our conversation is important too, let it be with substances.
