most of the time, AT & ATB always quote us a place in mandarin, such as 布乐中心。After asking from members, then I know it's textile centre.evileye

Anyway if unsure, just don't start meter first. The pax also don't know the street name & worse still, they can't direct you to their destination, too bad. Ask them to hope for the best for the next cab. No point spoil our day over them. biggrin

When I first started, I picked up two PRC ladies from Geylang. They wanted to go to 布业中心。I was like??? So naive of me to ask them if they knew the Engrish name. Naturally not. They said every taxi uncle in Singapore knew where that place was. Then they called someone and passed the phone to me. A man spoke to me and said, "Textile Centre, Jalan Sultan." Only then I knew where. Dunno if he was the Or Kwee Tau anot? Haha.

Tanglin Halt Chap Lao is well, in Tanglin Halt.

Arjooni (Aljunied) Chap Lao is in Circuit Road, Balam Road area. Incidentally, Aljunied Chap Lao is one of the last flats built by SIT (Singapore Improvement Trust) in 1960s before HDB took over.

Chap Lao in Hokkien means 10 storeys. Next time you are in these areas, count the number of storeys for the old flats. They are exactly 10 storeys high...

Chap Si Lao (14 storeys) is in Strathmore/Dawson area.

Chap Lak Lao (16 storeys) is in Commonwealth Close.

For more information on the history of HDB flats, refer to : http://remembersingapore.wordpress.com/2012/05/11/from-villages-to-flats-part-2/

Forfar Heights @ Strathmore Ave...flats there characterised by their blue windows. Hence, "lam po lei" meaning blue glass in Hokkien. :)
