Hi all! Would like to ask regarding the $1000 security deposit to be made while registering as hirer/relief, must it be paid fullg on the spot or can I pay that in installments? Do the taxi co. allow for such arrangements? tHanks in advance!
Thanks taxiuncle & movingaway for the replies! I am looking forward to be a hirer, but still finding out more about the different taxi companies. Of course must pass tdvl first, just started first day today @ STA.. :)
Good that you thinking and looking ahead, but first try to focus on your TDVL lesson first.
Look around this forum to id what are the pit falls and hints to mod 3 and 4 which are the famous killer mod.
So far based on stats, it is not impossible to pass all 4 mod at one day but the chances are low (reality). But with constant practice especially for Mod 3, it will be pretty easy, for Mod 4 is nothing but brain power, Mod 1 and 2 is understanding of the english lang.
btw one advice for you, if u have portable dvd player can start watching your 40 routes. there is common routes and routes which mayb near your estate which u r familiar and can avoid.

Payment is different between hirer & relief. When I took sonata from CDG as a hirer, I was supposed to pay $500 during collection, followed by $250 each. SMRT's security deposit is higher.

Its great to have such a warm welcome here! Yup I shall concentrate on my TDVL first, at the same time scouting and finding more information about the diff taxi co. My trainer is Seah LC. Funny and good trainer!
With regards to the 40 routes, do I have to just memorize the order of the roads together with the landmarks? I notice, in the 40 routes maps issued to me, there are significant landmarks along the routes which are numbered. We have not gone through module 3 or 4 yet, so perhaps I am getting ahead of myself. But honestly, I feel that I need as much time as possible in memorizing, especially the 40 routes. So I hope by asking here, I can find the best way to memorize and what exactly to commit to memory! =)
Maybe you can be a relief driver first, to see if taxi driving really suites you. Hirer has a much higher commitment than being a relief. Taking a taxi from comfort means more as you need to install your own radio head unit & reverse sensor, etc. Of course if you are lucky enough, you may get a taxi that has it all which the previous hirer did not take out. I'm not sure about the new i40 though. Apart from those items, as a hirer, you need to consider if you need to buy the season parking, longer hours of driving, family commitment, etc.
As for the 40 routes, I'll let other seniors advise you because personally I did not even read through the 40 routes. I just do the paper based on my own instinct and some ɾ³ý·¨ method. One time pass for me but I can consider myself super lucky. Not for your reference of course. lol
As for the street directory, unless you have a superb memory, if not I wouldn't suggest you to go and remember which pages has more hotels, which area has what kind of taxi stands, etc. You just need the correct way & method of finding the street directory. I did 60 questions under 40 minutes. Not boosting around. I can tell you that I have a very poor memory. My point is that every one has their own method, not one suites all. You can browse through the forum and you can find different methods and advise given by the seniors here.
All the best to your exams and hope to see you on the road soon. ;)
for myself, 40 routes I did mostly recalling which route link to which. u can still refer to street directory which I did. there is few tricky questions which require your to 'spot the difference' in some parts of the answers. time is important in module 4, dont waste too much time on one question.

Thank you for the tip!
With regards to the routes module, will they ask only about the routes or will they ask about the landmarks along a particular route as well?
For example Route 3, according to the the DVD and the 40 routes notes, there are the 'Tampines Housing Estate' on the right, 'Simei Housing Estate' on the left when travelling along PIE, then 'Raffles Town Club' on the right when travelling along Whitley Road etc.
My concern is, do I have to memorize the order of the landmarks as well? Or is it suffice enough to just remember the 'Airport Boulevard > ECP > > Exit 1 Changi FLyover > .... > Orange Grove Road (Orchard Hotel)' ?
I was going through Romaxxi's quizlet @ quizlet.com and I notice the questions are solely about the routes only. As mentioned above, I have not gone through module 4 yet in class, but I am just starting early in the process of memorizing. =) Thank you once again!

Fazz> For the 40 routes, this is what was shared in my class
1) look for common pattern in the routes like Airport -> ECP / PIE -> TPE, on PIE, there is Paya Lebar way, Jln Kolam Ayer, Jln TP, and the very frequent used like Whitely Rd exit etc
2) remember some of the landmarks, some question may ask
3) this is freaky... they will give u all answer the same, but the roads leading to the destination may not be what you learn, so u must be able to id which is the shortest road
My personnel take is looked for the common patterns and built your own pattern.
Used the Romaxxi as ref but still best read from the notes.
